Destin – Beaches of South Walton -
Miramar Beach |

Destin is
a city located in the panhandle on
the Emerald Coast of Florida in
Okaloosa County. Known for its
beautiful white beaches and
emerald-colored waters, Destin
originated as a small fishing
village and is now a popular tourist
destination. Destin is located on a
peninsula separating the Gulf of
Mexico from Choctawhatchee Bay. The
peninsula was originally an island,
however, hurricanes and sea level
changes gradually connected the
island to the mainland. Panama
City, located to the east, and
Pensacola, located to the west, are
each about 50 miles away. Destin is
considered the principal city in
this tourist resort metropolitan
area. |

The
Beaches of South Walton, located
in Okaloosa and Walton County, are a
26 mile stretch of sugar-white
beaches and consist of 15
communities, of which Miramar Beach
is one of the prime beach
communities. |

Miramar Beach, located
on Scenic Highway, is known as one
of the whitest beaches in the
world. The sand comes from the
Appalachian Mountains and is made of
finely ground quartz crystal giving
the appearance of sugar.
Residue flows down the Apalachicola
River and is deposited into the Gulf
of Mexico. Because of the currents,
the sand drifts west along the Gulf
Coast and settles from east of
Panama City to the Alabama coast. |
